Based on your Fit Check answers, you’re at the Starter stage — building marketing foundations before investing in a full agency. That’s smart. Here’s a self-directed roadmap to get real traction in the next 90 days.

What “Starter” means

Every business has a “not-quite-ready” phase, and there’s no shame in it. If you’re bringing in under $10,000 per month in revenue, just launched in the last twelve months, or currently spending less than $500 per month on marketing, you’re right at the Starter tier. That doesn’t mean your business is small — it means the math on a full agency retainer doesn’t work yet. Agency partnerships typically run $1,500 to $8,000 per month, and those numbers only translate to real ROI when there’s enough top-line revenue to scale. Instead of paying for services you’re not ready to leverage, the smartest move at this stage is to build the fundamentals yourself. The Starter roadmap below is what we’d tell a friend or a family member with a new business — no upsells, no gatekeeping, just the honest first-90-days playbook.

Your 90-Day DIY Roadmap

This is a self-directed plan. You don’t need us to run it; you need discipline, a calendar, and the willingness to spend a few hours a week getting your marketing foundation right. Follow this in order — skipping ahead before the foundation is set will cost you conversions later.

Week 1-2: Google Business Profile foundation

Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single highest-ROI marketing asset for local businesses, and it’s completely free. Start by claiming or verifying your profile at business.google.com. Fill out every field — hours, phone, website, services, service areas, attributes, and business description. Upload your first five photos: exterior, interior, team, product or service, and one candid work-in-progress shot. Pick the most specific primary category available (a “family dentist” beats “dentist”). If you serve customers at their location instead of yours, set up service areas by ZIP code or city. Finally, ask three real customers for reviews via a direct link — the trust signal from your first handful of five-star reviews compounds faster than any paid ad you could run this month.

Week 3-4: Website essentials

Run your homepage through Google PageSpeed Insights and Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test. Aim for a 90+ score on mobile and Core Web Vitals in the green — if you’re not there, compress your images and remove any unused plugins. Install Yoast SEO (the free version is fine at this stage), fill in title tags and meta descriptions for your top five pages, and connect your site to Google Search Console. Submit your XML sitemap. This is the plumbing that lets Google actually find and rank your content — you’d be shocked how many small business sites skip it entirely.

Month 2: Local SEO citations

Build five core citations to establish your business’s Name, Address, and Phone (NAP) across the web: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, Apple Business Connect, and Facebook Business. Keep your NAP identical everywhere — even a “St.” vs. “Street” mismatch can confuse Google’s local ranking algorithm. From there, join two or three industry-specific directories (chamber of commerce, trade associations, niche marketplaces relevant to your work). Do not pay a citation-building service at this stage; the manual work builds your understanding of how local search actually functions.

Month 2-3: Content foundation

Write six to eight pillar blog posts targeting long-tail keywords in your niche. A long-tail keyword is a three-to-five-word search phrase with real intent — “best commercial forklift for narrow warehouse aisles” beats “forklift.” Publish one post per week on a fixed schedule (a slow, consistent cadence outperforms bursts of activity followed by silence). Each post should be at least 1,000 words, answer a real customer question, and internally link back to your service or product page. This is the compounding asset that pays off in month six and beyond.

Month 3: Email + review flywheel

Add an email capture on your site (Mailchimp, ConvertKit, or the free tier of your email host is fine) and build a three-email welcome sequence that introduces your business, shares one useful tip, and invites a low-commitment first purchase or consultation. Set up a review-request automation — a simple text or email after every completed job or sale, using tools like Podium, BirdEye, or the free review request link inside Google Business Profile. Reviews are the flywheel that makes every other marketing dollar work harder, so start collecting them systematically from day one.

What “not a fit yet” honestly means

RMG’s typical clients spend $2,000 or more per month on marketing and generate $10,000+ per month in revenue because agency retainers only pay off when there’s enough revenue to scale. If you’re below that line, we’d be taking your money without delivering ROI you can measure — and that’s a fast way for both of us to be frustrated. The 90-day playbook above is exactly the work we’d have you do first anyway. Come back when you’ve hit $10,000/month in revenue, or when you’re ready to invest $500+/month in marketing consistently. Both signals tell us it’s time.

When you’re ready to grow, come back

Three signs you’re ready to consider an agency partnership:

  1. You’re consistently generating $10,000+ per month in revenue for three months in a row.
  2. You’ve hit the ceiling of what you can execute solo — you know what needs to happen, but the days aren’t long enough.
  3. You want to move faster than your current DIY pace allows and have the budget to invest in acceleration.

When any two of those three are true, come back and re-take the Fit Check to see if you’ve moved into the Growth-Ready tier. We’ll be here.
