The short answer

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a website so that AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini — cite it when they answer a question. Where SEO competes for a position on a page of blue links, AEO competes to be the source inside the answer itself. The two are related, but they are not the same discipline, and a site can rank well and still never get named.

Relative Marketing Group builds answer engine optimization for businesses across Conejo Valley, Ventura County, the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles. We are based in Westlake Village, we have been doing local search here for over seven years, and every strategy is led by Marissa rather than handed to a junior. Book a free 15-minute AEO consult and we will show you, live, what the answer engines currently say when someone asks for a business like yours.

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is how you get recommended by an AI rather than merely listed by a search engine. When a customer types a question into ChatGPT or sees a Google AI Overview, the engine does not hand back ten links. It composes an answer, and it names a small number of sources. AEO is the work of becoming one of those sources.

That work is different from ranking. An answer engine has to be able to do three things with your business: find a clear, direct answer on your site, identify who you are with confidence, and corroborate what you claim against other places on the web. Most local business websites fail at least two of those, not because the content is bad, but because it was written to persuade a human reader scrolling a page rather than to be extracted by a machine answering a question.

AEO vs SEO: what actually changes

  Traditional SEO Answer engine optimization
Goal Rank on the results page Get cited inside the answer
You compete for A position, one of ten A mention, one of three or four
What wins Keywords, links, authority Clear answers, entities, schema, corroboration
Content shape Long pages that build a case Direct answers first, detail underneath
How you measure Rankings, impressions, clicks Whether you are named, and how you are described
Where the visit goes A click to your site Often a direct call, having never visited

That last row is the one worth sitting with. A growing share of searches now end without a click. If an answer engine describes your business accurately and recommends it, the customer may call you having never seen your website at all — which is excellent for the phone and invisible in your analytics.

Why this matters for local businesses right now

Local is where answer engines are most decisive. A national query returns a long, hedged answer with many sources. A local one — the best dentist in Westlake Village, a marketing agency in Camarillo, who does website design in Simi Valley — returns a short list of named businesses. There is very little room on that list, and the businesses on it are not always the ones ranking first in Google.

The businesses being named tend to have three things in common: a site that answers questions directly, an identity the engine can resolve without guessing, and consistent corroboration elsewhere on the web. None of that happens by accident, and none of it is what a standard SEO programme was built to deliver.

Our answer engine optimization process

1

Answer engine audit

We ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini the questions your customers actually ask, and record what comes back. Are you named? Is the description right? Who is named instead of you? This is your baseline, and it is usually the first time an owner sees it.

2

Entity and identity cleanup

Answer engines need to know who you are before they will recommend you. We make your name, address, phone, services and people consistent across your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories the engines read — so there is one unambiguous version of your business.

3

Question mapping

We build the real question set from your Search Console data, your sales calls, and the People Also Ask results in your market. Not keywords. Questions, in the words your customers use.

4

Answer-first content

We restructure your pages so each one leads with a short, extractable, factually complete answer, then supports it underneath. This is the single change that moves the needle most, and it is the one most sites get wrong.

5

Structured data

Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and Person schema, implemented properly, so the engine reads your business as data rather than inferring it from prose.

6

Corroboration

We work on the third-party sources answer engines lean on — reviews, local directories, local press, professional listings — so your claims about yourself are confirmed somewhere other than your own website.

7

Monthly re-testing

We re-run the same prompts every month and report what changed: where you are now named, where you are not yet, and how the engines describe you. That report is the deliverable.

Which answer engines we optimise for

  • ChatGPT — including its browsing and search behaviour, where recommendations are increasingly specific and local.
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode — the answers that now sit above the traditional results for a large share of queries.
  • Perplexity — heavily citation-driven, and often the fastest place to see AEO work take effect.
  • Microsoft Copilot — the default assistant across Windows and Edge, drawing on Bing.
  • Google Gemini — surfaced across Google Search, Android and Workspace.

The underlying work is largely shared across all five. An engine that can find a clear answer, resolve your identity and corroborate your claims will tend to cite you regardless of whose logo is on it.

Answer engine optimization FAQ

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a website so that AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini cite it when they answer a question. Instead of competing for a position on a results page, you are competing to be named as a source inside the answer itself.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No. They overlap but they optimise for different outcomes. SEO works to rank a page among ten blue links. AEO works to have your business named in an answer that may replace those links entirely. A site can rank on page one and still never be cited, because the engine could not extract a clear answer or could not confirm who you are.

Do I still need SEO if I am doing AEO?

Yes. Answer engines draw heavily on what is already indexed and ranking, so search visibility feeds answer visibility. AEO is an additional layer on top of a working SEO foundation, not a replacement for it. If your site has no organic presence at all, we usually fix that first.

How long does answer engine optimization take?

Structural changes such as schema, entity cleanup and answer-first rewrites are usually reflected within weeks, because answer engines re-read the web far more frequently than Google historically re-crawled it. Corroboration work, which depends on third parties, takes longer. We re-test monthly so you can see movement rather than wait for it.

How do you measure AEO results?

By asking the engines. Each month we re-run a fixed set of prompts that mirror how your customers ask, and record whether your business is named, how it is described, and who is named alongside you. That is the honest measure. Standard analytics will not show it, because a customer who calls after an AI recommendation often never visits your website.

Do you offer AEO outside Ventura County?

Yes. We are based in Westlake Village and much of our work is across Conejo Valley, Ventura County, the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles, but answer engine optimization is not geographically limited. If you serve a defined market anywhere, the same process applies.

How much does AEO cost?

It depends on the size of your site and how much entity and corroboration work is needed. The audit in step one is what tells us, and we will walk you through the findings before you commit to anything. Book a free 15-minute consult and we will run the prompts with you.
