Step 1 — PageSpeed Insights. Go to pagespeed.web.dev and enter your homepage URL. The top section shows field data from real visitors over the trailing 28 days. That is the data that matters. The lower section is a lab simulation, useful for diagnosing causes but not for judging whether you pass.

Step 2 — Test more than the homepage. This is the step everyone skips. Your homepage is usually your best-optimized page. Test your top three service or product pages and your primary contact or booking page. Those are where conversions happen, and they are frequently slower than the homepage because they carry forms, embeds, and galleries.

Step 3 — Check mobile separately. Toggle the mobile tab. Most local businesses see the majority of their traffic on phones, and mobile scores are routinely far worse than desktop. If you only ever look at desktop, you are grading yourself on the easy test.

Use lab data to diagnose and confirm a fix worked technically; use field data to judge whether you actually pass.

Low-traffic pages sometimes show no field data at all, because there are not enough real visits to report on. That is not a failure — it just means you have to rely on lab data and the assessment of the template those pages share. Similarly, resist chasing a perfect score of 100.
